MALAYSIANS now have
the chance to catch the legendary American musical family, The Osmonds,
live.
For the first-time, the seven Osmond
siblings will reunite to perform for a one-night only concert at the Arena of
Stars, Genting Highlands on June 21.
The Osmonds achieved enormous worldwide success as teenage music idols in the
1960s and 1970s.
The group originally comprised brothers Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay and
Donny Osmond. They were later joined by their younger siblings Marie
and Jimmy.
Donny and Marie used to have a popular weekly entertainment show The
Donny And Marie Show, on American television in the 1970s. They also acted in
the musical comedy Going Coconuts.
Older brothers Virl and Thomas were born
deaf and did not appear on any of the group’s records. In 1978, they made
their performing debut with their siblings on The Donny And Marie Christmas
Special.
The Osmonds’ career started with a big break at Disneyland, followed quickly
by regular appearances on The Andy Williams Show in the early 1960s.
In the mid-1960s they performed with Sweden’s most popular singer Lars
Lonndahl, and gained a lot of popularity in Sweden. However, their most
successful period was the early and middle 1970s, when they achieved a string
of chart hits.
Donny, and to a lesser extent Jimmy, both achieved success as solo artistes,
as did Marie. Marie’s signature hit was the country song Paper Roses. Jimmy
achieved particular success in Britain and Japan, most notably for his single
Long Haired Lover From Liverpool.
The Osmonds’ breakthrough hit One Bad Apple, featuring lead vocals by Merrill
and Donny, bore an uncanny similarity to the their contemporaries The Jackson
5. Other hit songs by the family of singers included Double Lovin, Yo-Yo, Down
By The Lazy River, Hold Her Tight, Let Me In and Love Me For A Reason.
Wayne, Jay, Jimmy, and sometimes Merrill continue to perform as
The Osmond Brothers, with frequent appearances in the United States and
Britain. Jimmy has become a successful businessman and appeared in the third
season of the British reality series I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!.
Marie is a radio and television host and has appeared in American reality show
Dancing With The Stars. She also hosted Ripley’s Believe It Or Not.
Donny has a solo career touring the United States and Britain. He also does
theatre and appeared in the Broadway hits Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat and Disney’s Beauty And The Beast.
Alan’s eight sons sometimes perform as The Osmonds — Second Generation or
2ndG.
In their 50 historic years in entertainment, The Osmonds, collectively and
individually have recorded 142 albums, selling 100 million copies worldwide
with 51 Gold or Platinum recordings.
